It’s been a few months since I posted a new essay to the Essays page, but I’ve just done so. “Metaphor in Haiku” is a short essay that first appeared in South by Southeast 20:1, Spring 2013. In this essay I explore the difference between overt (intrinsic) and implied (extrinsic) metaphor in haiku. They often seem to be confused. Learning not to confuse them will, I believe, help haiku poets improve their craft.
