Post date: Jun 16, 2012 8:2:55 PM

The following is an announcement for a day-long haiku workshop I’m teaching in a week. For additional workshops and events on my calendar, please visit the Appearances page. +

The Nature of Haiku

Join Michael Dylan Welch, vice president of the Haiku Society of America, for a one-day workshop exploring haiku poetry as a window into appreciating the natural world, its seasons and the five senses. Explore the myths and realities of haiku, hear a brief overview of haiku in Japan and gain an understanding of important targets for haiku in English.

Saturday, 23 June 2012, 9:00am to 4:00pm

Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

near Mount Vernon, Washington

The class will include lecture, inspirational slideshow (with photographs, haiku and music), writing exercises and optional sharing, and outdoor nature walks for haiku inspiration. Registration is required. Workshop fee: $15. Find out more and register online or call the Interpretive Center at 360-428-1558.

Make a weekend of it. The Padilla Bay Reserve offers shore and upland trails, boating opportunities, and great birding. Overnight accommodations are available (and very reasonably priced) in the Bunkhouse. See a map of our facilitities.
