Haiku Can Help Improve Longer Poetry

One essay that I’m particularly proud of publishing is “Ten Ways to Improve Your Poetry with Haiku,” which first appeared in Poet’s Market 2005 (Writer’s Digest Books, 2004), and was reprinted in The Craft & Business of Writing (Writer’s Digest Books, 2008). Nice to get paid a second time without hardly lifting a finger! I direct the essay at writers of longer poetry, emphasizing how techniques for writing haiku can help improve one’s longer poetry—and I dare say many of the same techniques could also help improve fiction and even nonfiction. Not sure why I hadn’t added this essay to Graceguts long before now, but it now appears on the Essays page.
