Martin Lucas’s Haiku Spell

Newly added to the Further Reading page is the essay “Haiku as Poetic Spell” by Martin Lucas, with additional commentary from both Martin and me. I present this content in memory of this fine poet, who has just passed away. Martin had been missing from his home in Preston, England for a few weeks, and his body was just discovered on a beach at nearby St Annes. Martin and I had had an email discussion about his invigorating essay shortly after I first read it. We had talked about sharing this exchange with others, and I include it now, with his essay. Martin was a former president of the British Haiku Society, and had published two major haiku books, in addition to completing his PhD dissertation on English-language haiku. Go in peace, Martin Lucas.
