Mie Times Essays

Mie is a prefecture in Japan, next to where my wife’s parents live. For many years Mie Times, edited by Masako Ito, has been an English-language newspaper devoted to the art, culture, and events of the Mie region—famous, among other things, as the birthplace of Bashō. In years past I contributed a number of my haiku to the Mie Times haiku column, with poems selected by Kōko Katō. I also contributed three essays, two of which I’ve just added to the Essays page. They are “Finding My Way to Haiku” and “Different Ways to Visit Japan.” The third essay was “A Report on Haiku North America 2001,” already on the Reports page. Enjoy!
