The Dangers of Travel Haiku

A long new addition to the Essays page is “Fuji Over the Clouds: The Dangers of Travel Haiku,” an in-depth exploration of dozens of haiku I wrote on my first trip to Japan nearly twenty years ago. I draw the distinction between impressions and insights, yet recognize the value of even the weakest travel haiku as ways to remember one’s travels. This essay appeared in Under the Bashō in March of 2018. Please take a look.
