silent night—
the bell choir bells
at rest in velvet
Truly beautiful. Those once rejoicing bells now even further hushed by the velvet that surrounds them, as the Christian world awaits a newborn’s cry to break the holy silence.

Palpably assonant, this haiku is all about sounds, but there aren’t any, at least not in the scene that Michael has described. However, his words are in a mode that is melodious. The Ls and the double meaning of “silent night” work perfectly together to convey a picture that is solemn, yet joyful at the same time.
