I have twice had my haiku featured in “Haiku in the Queue” (previously known as “Hiway Haiku”), a display of haiku presented in three panels in calligraphy installed like Burma-Shave signs along the ferry line-up on the north end of Vashon Island, Washington. Somewhere I have on-location photos from the first time one of my haiku was used, and I’ll add them here when I find them. But here’s the poem from the first time, which was sometime before 2009, with calligraphy by Kaj Wyn Berry:
morning birdsong
my paddle slips
into its reflection
And here’s my contribution from the second time, in November of 2025, using the following poem:
the old barn
where we first kissed
condominiums
Gratitude to Ann Spiers for the following on-location photos. My thanks to Mike Feinstein for choosing this poem, and to Suzanne Moore for the calligraphy. For more information about this public art project, please see “Haiku in the Queue” on the Haiku Northwest website.
Kaj Wyn Berry’s signature on the back of my “morning bird song” poem (she did the poem’s calligraphy).
