In 2002, compiler Jackie Hardy published Haiku: Poetry Ancient & Modern with MQ Publications in England and with Charles E. Tuttle in the United States, and it was reprinted by London’s Octopus Books in 2008. In 2003, a French edition, titled Haïku, Poésies anciennes et modernes, appeared from Éditions Véga in Paris, adapted from English by Bernard Dubant. And in 2004, a German edition, titled Haiku: Alte und moderne Meister, appeared from Patmos-Verlag der Schwabenverlag AG in Düsseldorf, with translations by Hans Christian Meiser. All volumes appeared in hardback and at least the English version later in paperback, with colour artwork throughout. Each edition presents 261 haiku and senryu, including 28 translations from Japanese masters, divided into chapters for wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The following are my poems in the three versions of this book (from pages 136, 184, and 224), in the original English and in their French and German translations (the German translator added periods to each poem).

the weathervane
pointing to earth
empty silo—
spring wind pops the metal
in and out
April shower—
my girlfriend’s house key
back on my key ring
