Skipped Stones: Faces in Time by Harvey Hess. Eight Pound Tiger Press, 1994, 8½ by 8½ inches. A 31-page loose-leaf portfolio in an embossed fold-out box tied with string. $34.00 postpaid from Eight Pound Tiger Press, P.O. Box 141, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613-0141 [address no longer correct]. With an elegant design and fine typography by Philip M. Fass, Skipped Stones presents haiku by Harvey Hess carefully positioned to let you see parts of other haiku through the transparent pages. Words several pages away appear blurred, but sharpen as you lift the pages. This artist’s book is pricey but worthwhile, an innovative treasure [only 200 copies made], with poems and their elements working together to create a pleasing flow. Two favourites:
