First published in the Traffic Culture Exhibition. Although most previous exhibitions have been held at Ueno Station in Tokyo, Japan, in 2025 the station was still undergoing renovations. Consequently, for 2025 (as with 2024), the poems appeared in an elaborate virtual exhibition during October 2025, where visitors could move around a gallery to view all the winning haiku (and photographs). The temporary gallery is no longer available, but you can see photographs below, view a short video visit on YouTube, and read the poems on the website (scroll down to see the haiku section). 【選評】昔々、お母さんと来た駅に今は子どもと立っている。この何十年かの時間の経過が、この句の主役だろう。かつての母と自分の姿に、今の自分と子どもが重なる。時の流れとともに失われるものもあれば、逆に生まれて成長するものもある。人生はそう辛く悲しいことばかりでもない。なお「旅の俳句」は旅のあれこれを写すばかりでなく、作者の心の気持ちや夢がしっかり伝わるものであってほしい。
A long time ago, I came to this station with my mother; now, I stand here with my own child. The passage of these decades is undoubtedly this haiku’s protagonist. The figures of my mother and me overlap with my own self and now the child. Some details are lost to the flow of time, while others are born and grow. Life is not all hardship and sorrow. Besides, I hope “travel haiku” capture not only various aspects of the journey but also truly convey the author’s feelings and dreams. —Hasegawa Kai

【選評】引き出しの中からか、本に挟んであったのか、一枚の古い切符が出てきた。そこに印字された日付け。きっと楽しい思い出なのだろう。だからこそ捨てなかったのだ。最近はデジタルの切符もあるが、これは紙の切符である。季語らしい言葉はないが立派な句である。
An old ticket has emerged from a drawer or from inside a book. A date is printed on it. It must have been a fond memory. And that is why the author did not discard it. Recently, digital tickets have been introduced, but this one is a paper ticket. Though it lacks a season word, this is a fine haiku. —Hasegawa Kai
