I first wrote the following poem on 11 February 1994, and it was published in Geppo XVI:8, March/April 1994. It later appeared in The Open Sky, a 1997 anthology published by the Yuki Teikei Haiku Society, with a Japanese translation by Kiyoko Tokutomi. In late 2000, at Koyama Kannon, an island temple in the middle of the Hidakawa River near where my wife’s parents lived in Minokamo, Japan (see temple photos), I entered the translation for a winter haiku contest. It won an honourable mention and was published in February 2001 in the Japanese haiku journal Jizai. The poem also appeared with a haiga illustration in Evergreen, an English-language haiku journal published by Ikuyo Yoshimura in Gifu, Japan (XI:1, #95, 6 January 2001). The Japanese calligraphy and translation were included in the Open Sky book in 1997, but the bio and three additional poems in Japanese translations came from Haiku Troubadours 2000: Contemporary World Haiku Anthology from Japan, Ban’ya Natsuishi, editor, Fujimi, Japan: Ginyu Press, 2000. Born and raised in Watford, England, in 1962, he moved to Ghana and Canada. He holds British and Canadian citizenship. Since 1988, he has lived in Foster City, south of San Francisco. He is an editor at IDG Books. He publishes haiku books with his own company, Press Here, and edits the short-form magazine Tundra. From 1989 to 1997, he edited Woodnotes magazine. He has a master’s degree in English. His books include Tremors (1990) and Two Autumns (1990). His haiku have been collected in magazines and anthologies, most notably Haiku Without Borders: A World Anthology (1998), The Haiku Anthology (1999), and Global Haiku: Twenty-five Poets Worldwide (2000). In 1996, he helped found the American Haiku Archives at the California State Library in Sacramento, California. In 1997, he became the first vice president of the Haiku Society of America.
