Two Recently Published Essays

I’ve just added two recent publications to the Essays page. One is a “favourite haiku” write-up on poems by Hamish Ironside, called “Three Ironside Haiku,” exploring how three of Hamish’s poems succeed while breaking some of the so-called rules of writing haiku. The other essay, a longer contribution several years in gestation, is titled “A Moment in the Sun: When Is a Haiku?” Many haiku poets outside Japan talk of the “haiku moment,” but is this moment as simple as they believe it is? This essay, recently published in Notes from the Gean (along with the Ironside piece), explores this question and shows a variety of my haiku as examples of different categories of haiku moments.
