a sculler’s oar                                              太陽が滴る

Photographers know the “golden hour” when the day’s light shortly after sunrise or before sunset is redder or perhaps orange, and less harsh than at midday. Such light warms up the finest photographs—and our appreciation for our surroundings. No wonder the sculler in this poem has paused to admire the light. —Michael Dylan Welch

The dog in this poem is no doubt returning because of colder temperatures. The dog’s owner surely also has increased empathy for the dog when the weather turns frosty, finding added relief when the long-lost dog returns. The fadedness of the poster tells us that this dog has been missing for a long time, making the reunion sweeter and more of a surprise. —Michael Dylan Welch

この作品の犬が戻ってきたのは寒くなってきたからにほかなりません。飼い主の方も霜が降りる頃には犬への思いが強くなっていたはずで、長いこと行方知れずの犬が戻ってきたときには一層の安堵を感じたに違いないでしょう。ポスターが色褪せてしまっているのは、この犬が長く行方不明だったことを物語っていて、この再会をうれしいと同時に驚くべきこととしています。（マイケル・ディラン・ウェルチ）

The beauty of the night’s stars makes words not only inadequate but unnecessary. This is a shared experience, and the poet seems to know empathetically that their companion is also content with silence in the presence of nature’s wonder. —Michael Dylan Welch

Global warming has made Japanese summers hotter and longer. It would be difficult to answer whether the inside of a cello is actually cool or not, but anyone who hears its rich, mellow tones will surely agree with this haiku. —Toshio Kimura

温暖化で日本の夏は暑く長期化しています。チェロの内側が実際に涼しいかは難しいところですが、チェロのあの中低音の音色を聞けば、誰でもこの句に納得することでしょう。（木村聡雄）

When the summer heat had eased somewhat, perhaps one might have seen a snake in the woodlands. As it slithered along, the still-dazzling sunlight might have seemed to shimmer and sway. A work of fresh expression. —Toshio Kimura

America's independence came on the fourth of July, 1776. Festivities will be held across the States. Though the dress was made for this day's celebration, the hem seems to have frayed. Joyful anticipation and bewilderment are captured within a single haiku. —Toshio Kimura

アメリカの独立は一七七六年七月四日。米各地でお祭りが催されることでしょう。この日のための服なのに裾がほつれてきたようです。楽しい期待感と戸惑いとが一句の中に表されています。（木村聡雄）

The word “drone” turns from being a threatening war machine to a more benign sound, the mundanity of it contrasting with the horrors of war. Perhaps the lecture has a less persuasive message than the sound of the mower, or maybe they’re the same. —Michael Dylan Welch

a broken guitar                                           壊れたギター

The sound of the rain makes up for the lost sound of the guitar. We may wonder why someone would try to sell a broken guitar, but maybe because it still has sentimental value, or because the seller hopes it can be fixed and enjoyed by someone else. Do marigolds represent joy and optimism, yet also grief and mourning? We might associate them more with cultivated gardens than a wild border fence, unless they are deliberately planted at a border fence, which might be the point. —Michael Dylan Welch

The word “small” may be unexpected, this smallness suggesting that these unnamed keepsakes were collected by a child, either long gone, or that they are seen now by an adult with a mix of emotions. One’s childhood is hidden in this attic, but perhaps not at this moment of rediscovery. —Michael Dylan Welch

Is the rain sharpening the knives, or is the poet noticing the rain while performing this task? We may wonder about the nature of the relationship between the poet and the mother, and why it’s necessary to sharpen those knives. The season of winter may provide a clue. —Michael Dylan Welch
