Haiga with Kuniharu Shimizu

The following haiga present poems by Michael Dylan Welch, with artwork by Kuniharu Shimizu. The first haiga uses my haiku that won first prize in the 2000 Henderson haiku contest sponsored by the Haiku Society of America. The second haiga uses a poem of mine that won grand prize in the Bashō 360th Anniversary Contest in Japan, sponsored by Mie Times. All of the following haiga have appeared on Kuni’s See Haiku Here blog. See also the World Haiku Association Haiga Contest that Kuniharu judges each month. The poems appear by themselves at the end.

a gentle wave

wets our sandals +

first star—

a seashell held

to my baby’s ear

a table for one—

leaves rustle

in the inner courtyard

drifting

into the moon

first snow . . .

the children’s hangers

clatter in the closet

wet beach sand—

a sandpiper’s song

of footprints
